JOSEF VAVROUŠEK AWARD 2021 Every spring, the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague invites applicants for the public Josef VAVROUŠEK Award. Competition is open to Bachelor, Masters and Dissertation Theses defended in the current and past Academic Year, with reviews and results enclosed. Award categories: a) Student (nature and extent of Bachelor or Diploma Thesis); b) Scientific research (nature and extent of Doctoral Thesis). In 2021 in the category of Diploma Thesis were awarded 2 Students from Department of Environmental Law, Faculty of Law, Charles University. The first place reached Mr. Přemysl Pečený with his work on theme Selected issues of legal regulation of genetically modified organisms. The second place reached Mr. Jakub Straka with his work on Legal aspects of alternative fuels’ use in transport. In the category ofDoctoralThesiswere awardedone Student fromDepartment of Environmental Law, Faculty of Law, Charles University. The honorable mention reached Ms. Tereza Fabšíková with her work on Criminal Law Instruments of Environmental Protection. Josef Vavroušek (1944–1995) was Czech environmentalist, scientist, professor and politician, and founder of the Environment for Europe Process. He worked for 15 years (1975–1990) as a scientist in the field of cybernetics, general systems theory, science of science, and human environment, specializing in macro-ecology of Man and environmental policy. During this period, he was a member of the executive body of the Ecological Section of the Biological Society, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1985–1991), and a member of the Club of Rome. He was also one of the founders of the Civic Forum and later of the Civic Movement in Czechoslovakia and a member of their executive bodies. In 1989 Josef Vavroušek was one of the leaders of the Czechoslovakian Velvet Revolution. In April 1990 he became vice-chairman of the State Commission for Scientific and Technical Development (responsible for the environment), and then in June 1990 he became the first (and last) environment Minister of the Federal Government of Czechoslovakia. In 1991, together with President Václav Havel, he co-organized the historically first conference on the environment in Europe, which took place at the castle in Dobříš near Prague. In 1992, he helped to found the non-profit Society for Sustainable Living. Until his tragic death in the Slovak part of the Western Tatras, he worked as an associate professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. In his memory, students from Czech and Slovak universities are every year awarded the above-mentioned award for excellent final theses in the field of the environment. ♠♠
