CYIL 2014
MARTIN FAIX CYIL 5 ȍ2014Ȏ leave after 20 years of service as the director of the Institute of International Law at the Faculty of Law in Brno, he published a wide range of publications aiming at the scientific community as well as at students. Some of them are: Sanctions in International Law (Sankce v mezinárodním právu, 1976), United Nations: for Students of Law Faculties (Organizace Spojených národů: pro posluchače právnických fakult, 1981), Introduction to Theory of International Law (Úvod do teorie mezinárodního práva, 1983), Outer Space and the Law of Outer Space (Vesmír a kosmické právo, together with Jiří Malenovský and Mahulena Hošková, 1986), International Law Aspects of the Fight Against International Terrorism (Mezinárodně právní aspekty potlačování mezinárodního terorizmu, together with Jiří Malenovský, 1983), History of Public International Law (Historie mezinárodního práva veřejného, 1991). The decision of prof. David to leave the academy did not last for long time. Despite his successful work in advocacy, in 1997 he decided to accept the invitation to become a professor of international law at the Faculty of Law in Olomouc. He often underscored this as one of the best decisions of his life. Besides his teaching activities, prof. David continued his scholarly and pedagogical work, providing an inspiration and guidance to his colleagues and students, many of whom are today respected international lawyers themselves working in various positions at law faculties in the Czech Republic, at the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic, the Court of Justice of the European Union, or at the United Nations in New York. Prof. David did not avoid writing about negative phenomena which concerned developments in Czech society, such as corruption ( Corruption in International, European and Czech Law [Korupce v právu mezinárodním, evropském a českém]), or in international society, such as terrorism ( The Phenomenon of International Terrorism [Fenomén mezinárodního terorismu]). He also produced one of the leading textbooks in public international law on the Czech and Slovak market, at first in cooperation with František Zbořil and Pavel Sladký, later with Pavel Bureš, Ondřej Svaček and Martin Faix. Currently the book is already being sold in its sixth edition. Palacký University in Olomouc paid tribute to his outstanding achievements by awarding him the doctor honoris causa in 2007. Beyond his many professional achievements, prof. David was above all a warm and dedicated human being, which many experienced in interaction with him, be it professionally, or personally. I join many others in the community of Czech and Slovak (international) lawyers, and especially my colleagues from the Faculty of Law in Olomouc, in offering my condolences to his family and honouring his memory.
