CYIL 11 (2020) THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT… THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL LAW, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREA OF INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY (FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE CZECH SCIENCE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS) Jan Ondřej, Magda Uxová Abstract: The League of Nations, which began its work in 1920, was founded based on the idea of developing the cooperation and guarantee peace and security among nations. In order to implement this idea, there was emphasis for the need of states to make commitments not to resort to war and to adhere strictly to the rules of international law recognized as binding standards of actions of governments. The League of Nations also performed other social and cultural tasks. A specific problem was that the League of Nations was conceived from the beginning as an institution dependent on factual international development, on the approach of individual states and on the mutual balance of forces between them. However, the contribution of the League of Nations is, that it was the first international organization to represent a system of collective security. The paper evaluates the importance of the League of Nations for the development of international law in terms of its pros and cons. Resumé: Společnost národů, která zahájila svoji činnost v roce 1920, byla založena na myš- lence rozvoje spolupráce a zaručení míru a bezpečnosti mezi národy. Za účelem realizace této myšlenky byla zdůrazněna potřeba, aby se státy zavázaly, že se nebudou uchylovat k vál- ce a budou striktně dodržovat pravidla mezinárodního práva, uznávaná jako závazné normy jednání vlád. Společnost národů plnila i další sociální a kulturní úkoly. Určitým problémem bylo, že Společnost národů byla od počátku koncipována jako instituce závislá na faktic- kém mezinárodním vývoji, na přístupu jednotlivých států a na vzájemné rovnováze sil mezi nimi. Přínosem Společnosti národů však je, že to byla první mezinárodní organizace před- stavující systém kolektivní bezpečnosti. Příspěvek hodnotí význam Společnosti národů pro rozvoj mezinárodního práva z hlediska jeho kladů a záporů. Mr. Ondřej is the author of a textbook on International Public, Private and Trade Law (2014) and of many publications on international spaces (space law, law of the sea, Antarctica), e.g. the publication The Law of International Spaces (2004), disarmament and international security, e.g. the publication Disarmament – Means of Ensuring the International Security (2008).
