THE 50 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TREATY ON THE NON-PROLIFERATION…

The 50 th Anniversary of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons: Balance and Future Perspectives for 10 th Review Conference Maria Manuel Meruje Abstract: The discussion concerning nuclear weapons is still relevant, especially when the demand for nuclear materials remains. It reinforces the relevance of the international peace and security, and the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation legal regimes. After 50 years, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) continues to be the pillar of international peace. The review of the NPT should have taken place in New York at the United Nations headquarters in May of 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the States that are Parties to the NPT agreed to postpone the tenth NPT Review Conference to a later date. Given the historical circumstance of the 50 th anniversary of the NPT, the coincidence of the revision of this same Treaty and the latest developments on nuclear armament in some countries, we intend in this study to analyze the NPT, as well as its historical background, its context and future perspectives, answering this increase of nuclear risk. Resumé : Diskuse o jaderných zbraních je stále aktuální, zvláště když poptávka po jader- ných materiálech přetrvává. Posiluje význam mezinárodního míru a bezpečnosti a právní- ho režimu jaderného odzbrojení a nešíření jaderných zbraní. Smlouva o nešíření jaderných zbraní (NPT) je i po 50 letech pilířem mezinárodního míru. Přezkoumání NPT se mělo konat v New Yorku v ústředí OSN v květnu 2020. Kvůli pandemii Covid-19 se státy, které jsou stranami NPT, dohodly na odložení desáté hodnotící konference NPT na pozdější da- tum, nejpozději však do srpna 2021. Vzhledem k historickým okolnostem 50. výročí NPT, koincidenci revize téže smlouvy a nejnovějšímu vývoji v oblasti jaderného zbrojení v někte- rých zemích máme v úmyslu v této studii analyzovat NPT , jakož i jeho historické pozadí, jeho kontext a budoucí perspektivy, které odpovídají tomuto nárůstu jaderného rizika.
