CYIL 14 (2023) MOOT COURTS ON ISSUES OF PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW IN 2022/2023 MOOT COURTS ON ISSUES OF PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW IN 2022/2023 Like in the previous years, let me introduce you to the information regarding participation of some of the Czech student teams in competitions focusing at issues of public international law. This time, I would like to present two successful teams of the Faculty of Law of the Charles University. One participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the other in the Foreign Direct Investment Arbitration Moot Court. The 2023 Jessup Case Concerning the Clarent Belt dealt with the issues of interpretation of a peace treaty, unilateral economic sanctions, hazardous waste management, and regulation of armed conflict. The Faculty of Law of the Charles University team consisted of 5 student members (Maciej Górski, Veronika Hájková, Adam Lev, Štěpán Vrba, and Ondřej Cidlina) and was “coached” by me with the assistance of Ms. Petra Rešlová, who participated in the Jessup as a student member herself in the past. During the international rounds, the Czech team faced tough competition, including a team that made it to the finals of the entire International rounds, yet managed to present the case with strong arguments and defended their positions successfully. It is worth mentioning that the 2023 International rounds were the first after several years that have taken place in Washington D.C. again. Since 2020, the rounds were either cancelled (2020) or held in virtual format (2021 and 2022). The author of this contribution would like to express his congratulations to the organisers of the competition, the International Law Students Association team, for the hard work and enthusiasm that they dedicated to the Jessup in the uneasy years, as well as in 2023 when they had to “reinvent” the forgotten know-how of holding the world’s largest public international law moot court competition. And they managed it with excellent success. The second competition that I would like to mention, is the FDI. Faculty of Law of the Charles University team consisted of 7 students (Michal Černý, Petr Hrebenár, Tereza Kusková, Anna Mlynářová, Alice Nováková, Kamila Schejbalová, and Johana Žižáková) and was supervised by Ms. Nikola Kurková Klímová. The international investment arbitration moot court focused at a dispute between commercial investor producing pharmaceutics and a fictitious state during a non-international armed conflict. The topic particularly focused at res iudicata , the obligation to present a case to domestic courts and violation of the full protection and security standard. The Charles University team was awarded the 8 th place for the best written memorial for the investor and 10 th place for the best written memorial for the state. Generally, the team was awarded 21 st place. Both teams, as well as all students participating in any moot, deserve congratulations. May their successes continue. Milan Lipovský 1
