CYIL vol. 9 (2018)

MILAN LIPOVSKÝ CYIL 9 ȍ2018Ȏ Similarly as in other moots the team submitted two written submissions and the best 10 teams from each UN region (including the Charles University team) were invited to Geneva where the finals took place. Apart from the participation itself, our students were invited to several lectures by representatives of the UN human rights bodies and met diplomats from the Czech mission in Geneva. As in every year, the Charles University team also participated in the largest international law moot court competition – the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. I have already described Jessup in previous articles many times so I will only mention this year’s issues. The team consisted of 5 members: Eva Bělohlávková, Ivan Fencl, David Janků, Eliška Mocková, and Petra Reznáková, I was the coach. This year the team also went to Cyprus for the so-called Jessup friendly, a Jessup premoot where teams from countries with only one participating team can compete in place of their national rounds. That has proven to be a great opportunity. In the international rounds in Washington D. C., the Charles University team competed for example against Columbia University in New York and gained very important experience. The topic of 2018 Jessup was indeed a very current one – nuclear disarmament and related use of force. After Jessup, three members of the team (Ivan Fencl, Eliška Mocková, and David Janků) proposed to use their newly acquired experience in a new moot – the Nuremberg Moot Court. In July 2017, the 4 th year of this new moot took place and the Charles University team participated as well. The moot is focused on issues of international criminal law and simulates proceedings in front of the pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court (confirmation of charges). I would like to congratulate all the above-mentioned (as well as those I haven’t been informed about) students who participated in any moot this year. They have for sure gained wonderful experience that will help them in their future professional life. While students are of course the most important priority in moots, I would also like to thank all the sponsors who support the students and, in particular, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Prague White & Case office which has supported the Jessup team and keeps proving to be a stable and friendly partner.
