The automotive sector has great importance for the overall economic development of Germany. It does seem, however, that Germany’s best years are behind it.

In 2017, according to data from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), production of passenger cars declined slightly, and in the two following years this decline has continued, attacking the 10% level. Exports turned in a similar performance. Registrations of new cars bucked this trend, however. In the full year 2019, Germany achieved record growth (+5%) in car sales, while in the other major automobile producing states of the EU the average growth was +1.2%. This occurred despite a relatively high base of comparison in 2018 because of the introduction of the WLTP.
