Figure 4: Action profile for Europe

5. Conclusions European companies declare that their activities help to achieve the following SDGs: 8 Decent work and economic growth, 12 Responsible consumption and production, 5 Gender equality, 13 Climate action, 3 Good health and well-being. Compared to other continents, European companies more often tend to follow the following SDGs: 12 Responsible consumption and production, 10 Reduced inequalities, 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure, and 11 Sustainable cities and communities. It is important to emphasise that we worked with the data provided by the companies, revealing if they declare to follow the SDGs or not. Thus, there is no feedback if they currently really do so. If we compare the results with the UN Global Compact opinion that there are two “worth highlighting as cross-cutting themes SDGs” for industrial companies: SDG 12 Responsible consumption and production and SDG 17 Partnerships for the goals (United Nations Global Compact and KPMG, 2016), we can conclude that there is a big gap in case of SDG 17. The SDG has been ranked 10th in Europe in terms of frequency analysis (i.e., 9 other SDGs are followed more often), and 13th in Europe compared to other continents using the PROMETHEE method (i.e., when comparing Europe with other continents, 12 other SDGs reach better results). In our opinion, these results reflect the basic economic country conditions. The European companies included in the study are from countries with developed economies (with the exception of only one company from Ukraine, which belongs to economies with transition according to the UN Country Classification). Input data from America and Asia include countries with different economic conditions. On the other hand, Africa only includes data from countries with developing economies. Thus, further research will focus on the classification of countries according to the basic economic conditions. Another criterion that can have a major impact on the results obtained is the size of the companies. Global companies often followed most SDGs, while small and medium-sized companies preferred a small number of SDGs. This analysis will also be part of further research.
