newly adopted Ljubljan-Hague Convention was used as comparandum. The treaty makes cooperation mandatory for all states parties regarding genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, as defined in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. It also allows states parties to opt into cooperation regarding additional crimes found in annexes to the treaty, including the war crimes amendments to the ICC Statute. That said, the MLA Treaty will undoubtedly prove useful to states wishing to deepen their cooperation with other states on core crimes, which do not yet have either MLA treaties or extradition agreements otherwise allowing them to do so. In conclusion, we assess that whether the legislation of the Slovak Republic in this area is sufficient or need to be changed and to propose possible solutions de lege ferenda , mainly changes in the slovak criminal procedure Act, concerning international judicial cooperation in criminal matters inspired by MLA Treaty articles. CHAPTER 10 Universal jurisdiction in the light of the war in Ukraine Peter Matuška, Nikolas Sabján The tenth chapter discusses the concept of universal jurisdiction and its potential importance in the context of war in Ukraine. The authors briefly discuss on some of the salient features of universal jurisdiction and subsequently turn to its application, while focusing on the context of Slovakia. While Slovakia’s legislation does allow the application of universal jurisdiction according to its Criminal Code, the domestic institution do not possess any practical experience with this tool. This may change due to the war started by Russia in February 2022. Thus, the authors’ aim is to bring attention to the possibility of relying upon this tool by Slovak institutions to prosecute those responsible for international crimes in the context of the said war. At the same time, they also point out the potential difficulties and practical hurdles that may arise while applying universal jurisdiction.
