according to the political parties’ ability to pass the 5% threshold and enter the parliament. As a result, the total number of analysed party programmes was reduced to seven. The programmes of these seven political parties were analysed according to the same rules as in the case of the Polish parties. First, a general categorisation the distinguishing programmes of the political parties was conducted according to the presence of nationalist populist appeals. Secondly, the semantics of the party slogans are examined. General categorisation – the presence of nationalist populist slogans in the programmes of the political parties: I. Parties whose political programmes do not contain any nationalist populist statements: Aliancia nového občana / Alliance of a New Citizen (ANO) II. Political parties whose political programmes contain nationalist populist statements: Komunistická strana Slovenska / Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) Kresťanskodemokratické hnutie / Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) SMER – The Direction Hnutie za demokratické Slovensko – Ľudová strana / The Movement for Democratic Slovakia – People´s Party (HZDS-ĽS) Slovenská demokratická a kresťanská únia / SlovakDemocratic andChristian Union (SDKÚ) III. 167 Although the SMK was considered to be a national minority party/coalition, due to the existing election law, the parties representing national minorities had to compete in the elections according to the same principles as their “Slovak” counterparts.
