For inland waterways transportation, different vessels are used compared to the maritime transportation. The biggest container ships can carry up to 20,000 TEU (see Figure 6.3). More than for other transportation modes, the energy consumption depends on the speed of transportation. In Table 6.9, the average energy consumption is given for container ships. The vessels use heavy fuel oil.

The distance is 20,000 km. The total energy consumption is: F = 4 TEU x 20,000 km x 0.053 kg/TEU km = 4.24 t of heavy fuel oil. For inland waterways the average value for Germany is 0.014 l/t km for bulk goods. 6.3.4 Air transport Two possibilities exist for the transportation of goods with airplanes. The first one is the transportation in passenger aircrafts, the so called belly freight. The second one is the transportation with freight carriers. For the first possibility, it is necessary to consider the weight of a passenger when allocating the energy consumption to the specific transported good. In Figure 6.4 the different modes are shown. Each passenger is set to the average weight of 100 kg including baggage.
