Abstract: The fundamental object of this research, conceptual analysis, is habitual residence. The content of the concept of habitual residence, its definition and role, is analysed in three time periods, both past and recent. The concepts mentioned are not analysed separately but in connection with other related concepts. In the époque of republican and imperial Roman law two concepts were deliberated: citizenship and domicile. Citizenship and domicile were the reasons for attachment of an individual to an urban community. Such arelationship produced both legal and factual effects. Nationality achieved leading position in the period of the creation of nation states. Domicile and habitual residence have gradually gained a subsidiary position. Recently it is the concept of habitual residence which is acquiring the central position in various branches of law. Yet the unique and general role of the concept of habitual residence is conditioned by its substance. Resumé: Základním objektem zkoumání, pojmové analýzy, je obvyklé bydliště. Ve třech časových rovinách, a to vzdálených a blízkých je rozebírán obsah pojmu obvyklého bydliště, jeho definice i úloha. Uvedené pojmy nejsou zkoumány samo- statně, nýbrž ve spojení s jinými příbuznými pojmy. V období republikánského a imperiálního římského práva jsou předmětem úvah dva pojmy: občanství a do- micil. Občanství a domicil byly důvody spojení jednotlivce s městským společen- stvím. Takový vztah vyvolával jak právní tak faktické účinky. V období formování národních států si v 19. století vydobyla vůdčí postavení státní příslušnost. Domicil a obvyklé bydliště zaujímaly následně podpůrné postavení. Nyní je to pojem obvyk- lého bydliště, jenž se v různých formách práva ujímá ústředního postavení. Přitom jedinečnou i obecnou úlohu pojmu obvyklého bydliště podmiňuje jeho obsah.
