3. Working on bearings The first important task in this area was to investigate the influence of gearbox material on the durability of its rolling bearings. This task was related to the effort to replace the aluminum cast of the housing with a magnesium alloy cast. Within this task, dozens of durability measurements were carried out for three different housing materials - gray cast iron, aluminum and magnesium alloy. These measurements were performed in the SKF laboratory at Brno University of Technology. The evaluation of these experiments has helped the management of Škoda much in choosing the gearbox housing material. We thenmet the bearings again - in solving the failure conditions of the Octavia front axle bearings. It was again necessary to carry out a number of measurements (also on testing polygons) and there were also microscopic examinations of failures and metallographic analyzes. An extensive comparison was also made with similar designs of foreign cars. For evaluation was created software solving load of these bearings, but also outputs from measurements on polygons. The problem was successfully solved (Fig. 7).
