Sustainable Solutions for SCM

Introduction of telematics systems should be justified in places which suffer traffic congestion and at intersections with substantial traffic density. Telematics systems should also be intensified when there is a large public event. When designing telematics solutions, you should take into account factor such as changing of the climate, flora, fauna and acoustic insulation. Telematics solutions that should be applied in Wroclaw (see Figure 7.9): • Green wave when you drive 50 km/h. • Speed control app. • Implementation of more traffic light waiting systems at large junctions. • Dynamic traffic light sequences. • Parking spot boards. • Use of floating car data to improve traffic flow. • Intelligent transport applications. Maybe in the future there can be speed control which uses vehicles automatic cruise control, but that requires that every vehicle is able to receive this information.

Solutions for less pollution 1. Cycling

Cycling is an effective way to reduce traffic congestion in the city centre. In cities like Wroclaw, which are situated along rivers with a flat terrain profile, it is an especially ideal solution. Yet the terrain is not the only aspect which makes a city suitable for cycling. A solid cycling infrastructure must be developed as well, including both cycle lanes and places for parking the bikes, so-called cycle racks. While there are enough cycle racks in Wroclaw, the main problem seems to be a tangled net of cycle lanes, which might discourage some people from using bikes more frequently. The city of Wroclaw has already built more than 150 km of cycling lanes, which have the following drawbacks: • Lack of any system and often not connected to each other (see Figure 7.10). • Poor quality of some roads. Thus, a suggestion can be to design a long-term sustainable plan of developing Wroclaw’s cycling infrastructure, including connecting core lanes along the river Odra
