Ten years without Mr. President Václav Havel Abstract Ten years ago, he was died the last president of former Czechoslovakia and first president of Czech Republic Václav Havel (1936-2011). This article focuses on his relationship to environmental protection and environmental law and policy. Václav Havel promoted the green politics and environmental NGOs. He co-authored sections relating to environmental protection in the Constitution of the Czech Republic Act and in the Charter of human rights and freedoms. During his presidency at the beginning of the 90s it created a system of Czech environmental law. Václav Havel suggested creating a federal Ministry of the Environment. He stood at the birth of conferences on the landscape protection entitled “The face of our country”, that took place between 2001 and 2008. In their national and international speeches, he often spoke not only about the protection of human rights, but also for nature conservation. For example, Václav Havel spoke at the first Ministerial Conference UNECE within the “Environment for Europe” process, that took place in 1991 at Dobříš Castle in the former Czechoslovakia.
